Toshiba Tecra R850: Business Class on a Budget

Toshiba won't mind if we say that their previous business class notebooks looked...kind of cheap. They were bulky and unattractive, largely feeling like consumer notebooks with matte instead of glossy plastic. Yet when we visited with Toshiba to talk about their Tecra refresh, we were impressed, and Toshiba's reps were only too happy to put the new Tecras next to the old ones to demonstrate the stunning new weight loss plan the notebooks were put on. And the best part? While the Tecras have gotten a healthy refresh, their prices remain remarkably affordable. Is the 15.6" Tecra R850 the notebook you've been looking for?

Phenom II X4 B93 top business CPU

2.8GHz for businessmen

AMD is still on track to launch its new Phenom II generation for business people and these CPUs should find their place to the corporate hearts. Business class Phenoms based on the Deneb 45nm quad-core will launch in early Q3 2009.

The best is called Phenom II X4 B93 and this CPU works at 2.8GHz and is in fact nothing more than a regular Deneb based Phenom renamed to sound more like a business thing. This CPU has 8MB of total cache 4x512L2 and 6MB L3 and it fits the 95W TDP envelope.

The runner up Phenom X4 B91 has the same specs but it will end up cheaper and works at 2.6GHz. These CPUs will dethrone the Phenom X4 9850B and the rest of the Agena 65nm based generation, but as always this won’t happen overnight.

Google Announces Chromebooks For Business, At $28 Monthly Per User

Google Product VP Sundar Pichai announced today at Google I/O that the Chromebooks functionality for consumers will be expanded for businesses. According to Pichai, 50% of companies today are running the ten-year-old Windows XP software. In addition, that fact that users are increasingly using their laptops to move in and out of the company firewalls has created problems for CIOs and IT admins.Said Pichai, "Many companies have a hard time upgrading OS and most users use laptops today. They take them in and out of enterprise firewalls and this is challenging for IT admins. CIOs and IT admins are moving computing to the cloud."]]>

HP's Business Notebook Hat Trick

It's fair to say the refreshes HP announced for their consumer computers earlier this month seemed fairly lackluster. While nobody can complain about improved notebook speakers and the triumphant return of dedicated mouse buttons, there wasn't anything else remarkably fresh or exciting about their spring line. When we got a chance to meet with HP representatives in San Francisco to see their new business lineup, however, we saw very nearly the complete opposite.

Dell launches Latitude range of business laptops

Dell just announced a bunch of laptops, but these two are particularly interesting to us because we love ultra-portables (who doesn't?). The 12.1" Latitude E4200 weighs only 2.2 Lbs (thanks partly to its SSD drive), making it the lightest Latitude laptop ever. And it does that while preserving a size that allows to have a comfortable keyboard. Secondly, the E4300 is a 13.3", which is probably the best compromise between portability and work comfort. It weighs 3.39lbs. Both laptops feature a 1280x800 resolution display
The Latitude E6400 and E6500 are replacing the Latitude D630 and D830 as the new 14- and 15.4-inch form factors, respectively. Both have a magnesium-alloy backbone like their predecessors, but you'll notice that Dell has moved away from a matted silver finish in favor of brushed aluminum paint. Dell understands that design, especially in this age, is an important business element, which is why red-and-blue-color schemes will also be available in the September 2008 timeframe. Other notable features include dual-pointing devices, as the E6400 and E6500 have both a pointing stick and a touchpad; an RFID SmartCard sensor rather than an actual slot; and a one-screw-remove-plate at the base, so getting to the innards of the laptop is as simple as removing one screw. One of the most memorable things about the D630 was the impressive battery life and multiple battery options. With both laptops, you have the option of a 9- or 12-cell battery.

Dell's new Latitudes feature:

  • All-day computing on the E6400 with breakthrough battery life of up to 19 hours
  • Full-frame magnesium alloy construction and all-metal hinges
  • Sophisticated keyboard design
  • Ease of use with Dell ControlPoint, centralizing control of user settings for power management, connectivity configurations and security management in a single application
  • First business-class laptop with an intelligent backlit keyboard that automatically adjusts to ambient light levels
  • Exclusive ControlVault solution - intelligent security sub-processors with embedded non-volatile storage that centralizes and helps protect user credentials and security keys in a single hardened security ''vault'' away from the systems main drive
  • The E6500 is the only laptop with both a contact-less Smart Card reader and a fingerprint readers that complies with Federal Information Processing Standards
  • Simplified IT with compatible peripherals, adapters, docking and robust manageability features across the entire portfolio.
