Skylanders, the profitable return of Activision and Spyro

Skylanders: Spyro's Adventures, rebirth of a license who shot to fame on the first PlayStation console back on with our original concept. It will unfortunately cost you.

If we all at one time or another touched a joystick to control Spyro in one of his many adventures, the original PlayStation consoles in the last occupying our living rooms, the little dragon was not necessarily the heroes we imagined player in the catalog of Activision. So when we learned last February, Activision Guitar Hero put to death and a very advanced project like True Crime, but retained Spyro, we wondered why.

An idea into gold

The answer was provided during a presentation of Skylanders: Spyro's Adventures. This installment of the adventures of the little purple dragon is all about a concept: create and sell toys that used to play in the game Thus, the 32 Skylanders, game characters, with specific powers and divided into eight elements (water , fire, mechanical / robotics, magic, etc..) take the form of figurines from a few centimeters tall.
They are used by placing them on a "power gate" magical and fueled a base connected to the console that detects which character was introduced. So, you ask Spyro on this small arena and it appears in the game you want to play with a friend? It raises a second figure and this is the character who comes alive under your eyes to the screen. It is not far from the magic and the idea is excellent.

When imaginative rhymes with dough

Excellent because the game becomes an extension of the adventures imagined by the child's character. The reverse is probably true. This idea weaves a close link between video game and the imagination of the child. It is also excellent because each model will be sold around 10 euros. Three are supplied with the game, including Spyro, obviously. And Activision is quick to point out that the game, which contains twenty levels, may be ended only with these three figures. However, if the player wants to extend the twelve hours that should last the game if he wants to go into areas inaccessible to these characters 'basic', he will buy more figurines. Cute, well designed, they have everything to trigger a furious collectionnite acute in children between six and twelve, who are the heart of this new target of Spyro.

And do not count on seeing toddlers share figures, they are intelligent. They memorize the progression of the player with the character they represent. They rise and power throughout the adventure solo or cooperatively, but better yet, they can compete in an arena. A player against player mode, where the child shall choose early part of the character he will lead, some are good at melee, some for long range combat, etc.. Each fight earns experience, which leads to a leveling of the character. Leveling will be taken into account if the player returns to play solo, or will play with another friend. The balls to power a thousand!

Nice game

The game itself seems fairly standard blend of platform action and small puzzles. It is nice to pick up the Wii, but will also release on Xbox 360 and PS3. The graphics on the Nintendo console is very clean and colorful, the couple Wiimote and Nunchuk is the most efficient, no complaints. The story, meanwhile, should be equal, Activision having paid for the services of Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow, writers of Toy Story.
Expected in autumn 2011, Skylanders: Spyro's Adventures expected to sell between 69 and $ 59.99, with the game, obviously, three figures and the gate of power. Free to you, then sinking and pay the $ 290 needed to complete your collection.
The game looks good, the idea of the figures is excellent and should bring lots and lots of money to Activision. Now we know why Spyro has escaped the financial fates of the publisher ...
