Computer magazine dingbat logoSpecial Issue on Methodologies and Solutions for Mobile Application Security

 With the ubiquitous use of mobile devices, mobile application security has become an important research topic. Compared with personal computers or servers, mobile devices store much more sensitive personal information and are thus attractive targets for attackers seeking financial gain. Because these devices are always online and have a restricted user interface, it is easier for attackers to hide their malicious activities.
This special issue aims to present high-quality articles describing security algorithms, protocols, policies, and frameworks for applications running on modern mobile platforms such as Android, iOS, and Windows Mobile. Only submissions describing previously unpublished, original, state-of-the-art research that are not currently under review by a conference or journal will be considered.
Appropriate topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • app and app store security and privacy;
  • benchmarking and evaluation of mobile security solutions;
  • bots on mobile devices;
  • cloud security and privacy, as related to mobile devices;
  • mobile device forensics;
  • security and privacy in mobile device operating systems and middleware;
  • mobile malware collection, statistics, and analysis;
  • mobile services and social networking security;
  • reverse engineering and automated analysis of mobile malware;
  • security for smart payment applications, including near-field communication;
  • standardization efforts related to developing and vetting mobile apps;
  • testbeds and case studies for mobile platforms;
  • traffic monitoring and detection algorithms for mobile platforms;
  • virtualization solutions for mobile security; and
  • Web browser security on mobile devices.

Articles should be original and understandable to a broad audience of computer science and engineering professionals, avoiding a focus on theory, mathematics, jargon, and abstract concepts. All manuscripts are subject to peer review on both technical merit and relevance to Computer's readership. Accepted papers will be professionally edited for content and style.
The guest editors for this special issue include Ying-Dar Lin, National Chiao Tung University, Hsinchu, Taiwan (lead: ydlin@cs.nctu.edu.tw); Chun-Ying Huang, National Taiwan Ocean University, Keelung, Taiwan; Matthew Wright, University of Texas at Arlington; and Georgios Kambourakis, University of the Aegean, Samos, Greece.

Westmere-EX: Intel's Flagship Benchmarked

A month ago, Intel introduced its newest quad Xeon E7 series, the successor of the Xeon 7500. We gave you an overview of the Xeon's E7 lineup, but we didn't have benchmark results yet. According to Intel, the new Xeon established 16 new world records, beating similarily configured IBM POWER servers in some workloads and SPARC servers that are twice as expensive by a wide margin in almost any workload.

Today, we'll look at the available SAP S&D measurements, along with our results from weeks of virtualization benchmarking on ESX 4.1 update 1. By looking at both response time as throughput in our own virtualization benchmarking and power measurements with vApusMark, we get a very realistic idea what the the Xeon E7 is exactly capable off. We'll compare the best Xeon with AMD's Opteron 6174 (Dell R815) and its predecessor, the Xeon 7560.

Intel's Core i7 975 EE benchmarked

Intel will release Extreme Edition Core i7 processor within the near future, as well known overclocker Fugger has posted some early benchmarks and overcklocking results for the Core i7 Extreme Edition 975 which comes clocked at a default speed of 3.33GHz.

Although this is hardly a huge step up from the current 965XE part which is clocked at 3.2GHz, the new 975XE seems to overclock much better. Using a Gigabyte EX58-Extreme motherboard, Fugger managed to push the new CPU to 5.26GHz without any problems and with the help of a pair of Radeon HD 4870 X2 graphics cards, him and his partner Mikeguava managed to break 47,000 in 3DMark 05 which is a new world record. Its likely that Fugger will achieve even higher scores with this CPU given time and it looks like all the overclockers out there will have a new toy to play with in due time. As there are other chips in circulation already, wed expect more benchmark results to pop up over the next few weeks.

BaseMark GUI from RightWare Launches: SoCs Benchmarked

Rightware, makers of MobileMark, BrowserMark, and other mobile benchmarking tools recently launched a new 3D benchmark for mobile devices named BaseMark GUI. BaseMark joins our growing suite of smartphone benchmarks and tests OpenGL ES 2.0 performance on Android and other platforms with an emphasis on 3D UI. We've run BaseMark on almost all the devices we've got on hand, and will do so in the future on other devices.

How does the current crop of SoCs perform in this test? Read on for more.
