Use of Computers in Agriculture

Technological advances have brought about drastic changes in farming and animal husbandry resulting in tremendous increase in production capacity. The most common use of computers has been in replacing human effort and intervention in traditional farming machinery and other equipment. In addition, even the support functions for farming such as delivery of machinery, fertilizers and production of raw products have been successfully automated. But all these are just the labor-saving, basic uses that have been around even before the turn of the century. If computers have changed the ways of farming, then the Internet has only doubled that pace of change.

Applications of Computing Technologies in Agriculture

In today's times, agriculture is not just about crop production or livestock farming and associated activities. The challenges brought forth by ecological factors affecting the environment need to be a major consideration for any kind of farming activity. Farmers need to preempt environmental impact due to climate change and this is where modern technology comes to the rescue.

Farmland Assessment
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are being used for developing ranking systems that evaluate land and provide a site assessment to aid what is now known as precision agriculture. These hi-tech, interactive systems provide information based on a variety of factors such as soil conditions, drainage and slope conditions, soil pH and nutrient status, etc. Prior to the use of these systems, farmers were often in the dark about soil output, and unpredictable weather conditions affecting crop quality and profitability. Precision agriculture provides farmers with control by predicting vital information including fertilizer application and problems with drainage, insects, and weeds. Most government websites provide this kind of information free of cost, covering agricultural land masses across the United States. Global Positioning System (GPS) based technologies also help to monitor irrigation, field mapping, soil sampling, tractor guidance and crop scouting. This kind of technology equips farmers with enough information to increase crop yield in a manner that is consistent with the best environmental practices for sustainable agriculture.

Autonomous Farm Equipment and Tractors
Automated farm equipment, needless to say, scores over human controlled equipment in terms of consistency and reliability. Engine and machine functions such as transmission and hydraulic power output are controlled using microchips built into the equipment. Guidance technology is already being widely used in self-propelled equipment to aid crop seeding and fertilizer application. Automated feeding systems, computerized milk collection and milking machines have been around since the late 20th century, resulting in better economic yield for the dairy industry as well as livestock production. Automated tractors are probably not far away.

Farm Software
With regard to livestock farming, ready-made computer applications are available to track individual animals, storing and evaluating information such as age, health records, milk production, offspring productivity, and reproductive cycle status. This is often called herd recording. Similarly, most farm accounting software and other computer applications in agriculture provide services for record keeping, simulation of prediction-based models using that data, revenue and productivity estimation and reporting to aid in making decisions. Most farm software vendors provide you with an option to customize their applications to the specific needs of your farm or ranch.

Internet Forums, Social Networking and Online Knowledge Bases
Any business in the world that you can think of, has benefited from the advent and global reach of the Internet and related communication technologies (mobile computing, e-commerce etc.). Agriculture is no different. Imagine leveraging the power of the Internet to connect with farmers, agriculturists and agricultural scientists and other experts spread across the globe from the comfort of your own farmland or ranch. There are several forums and social networking sites on the Internet where farmers can connect with other farmers and farming experts and exchange know-how. In addition, there are several learning repositories serving as knowledge bases to provide information on a wide variety of agricultural topics. These avenues serve to reduce the rural digital divide, influence public policies, foster partnerships and connect all stakeholders across the agricultural value chain. For instance, a farmer can easily seek out and connect with an agricultural entrepreneur and begin the exchange of ideas or business proposals. Information such as price review for grain and livestock, pest information, real-time weather information (precipitation, temperature, humidity, solar radiation, wind speed, soil moisture and soil temperature) in any part of the world is literally available on one's fingertips.

E-agriculture
An emerging field of agricultural practices, e-agriculture focuses on coming up with innovative ways and best practices to use the existing information and communication technologies (ICTs) for sustainable agricultural development and food safety standards, particularly in rural areas. E-agriculture encompasses other related technological fields such as agricultural informatics, agricultural development and business. It aims to deploy all available technologies (computers, mobile computing, satellite systems, smart cards) for the empowerment of farmers and strengthening of partnerships across the food value chain.

The uses of computers in agriculture do have some real constraints such as, the lack of hardware and software infrastructure, training and skills, and research priorities. However, once these are overcome, the use of computers transcends automation and software application. In fact, it could be instrumental in bridging the rural digital divide and bringing prosperity to agriculturists not only in the United States, but also in other developing and emerging economies around the world.

Interpretation of Computer Error Beep Codes

You switch on your computer as usual and wait patiently as it goes through its startup routine. However, to your dismay, instead of the operating system booting in neatly, what you hear are mysterious beeps at startup. The computer beeps and fails to boot. Reminiscent of R2-D2's beeps and whistles language in 'Star Wars', your computer is trying to tell you what's wrong with it, in a coded, Morse code type language. By correctly interpreting the beeps, you can actually find out what's causing the booting process to fail. In this Buzzle article, I specifically interpret what error beeps at startup mean for different types of BIOS (Basic Input Output System) setups.

About Computer Error Beep Codes Displayed During POST
BIOS is the internal stabilization and control system of the computer, which oversees the working of all the constituent parts. It loads or boots the operating system and implements a complete status check before that. This test, known as Power-on Self Test or POST process detects computer problems and relays them to the user, through a cryptic 'beep' language. Every BIOS brand has its own beep code, which you will need access to, if you want to know what ails your computer. In the following lines, I help you in figuring out how to interpret computer error beep codes for various BIOS types, ranging from American Megatrends to Compaq and Award.

Interpreting the Beep Codes
To figure out what do 3 beeps mean on startup of a computer, you will have to first figure out the BIOS type of the computer. It appears on the screen during startup. If you can't see the startup screen, you can find the BIOS type, from the knowledge of the motherboard type. In the rest of this article, you will find a decoding table for most of the commonly used BIOS firmware, installed on computer motherboards.

The 70-Terabyte Homemade Computer

The 70-Terabyte Homemade Computer

It may not be the world’s best looking homemade computer, but it could be one with the largest capacities, made by a Russian PC enthusiast it has a massive 70-terabytes of storage.

70-terabytes is enough storage space to to hold 70,000 movies of DVD quality or about 24 million songs, and it has a total of 60 hard drives and a custom cabinet with 40 fans to keep everything nice and cool.

I have no idea how much it cost to make, but I suspect it would be quite a bit, that is some serious storage, and would probably take the average user a lifetime to fill with data.

Computer Boots Up and brings to the Welcome Screen and Freezes

Date Fixed : 04.10.10

Owner : Ms. Elain Rebutante
Processor : Intel 1.8 GHZ PGA
Motherboard : ECS P4-M800
Memory : 256 GB
Hard Disk Drive : Maxtor IDE 80 GB
Operating System : Win XP Sp 2

Technician : Drokz

PROBLEM :

Boots up, then freezes at Windows Xp Welcome Screen. No keyboard response. System can only be shutdown by holding the power button for few seconds.

CLIENT REQUESTS:

Data Backup
Antivirus Installation
DVD RAM Installation

INTERVENING FACTORS:

ECS P4m800 Driver lost.
Possibly Defective Hard Disk ( Clicking sound in the hard drive when the system is turned on )

OBSERVATION :

- Upon turning on the system, the clicking sound of the hard disk is clearly audible. With that unusual sound, any technician can directly point out that it might be defective or most probably be causing the problem.

- As the system starts to show the Windows Welcome Screen, the system freezes and locks the keyboard.

TROUBLESHOOTING PROCEDURE

- First, we need to check if the hard disk is the peripheral that is failing. It is quite obvious that the internal clicking sound indicates a mechanical inconsistency. So I removed the hard disk and restarted the system (computer) to see if the error is really related to that of the hard drive or might be the other failing failing peripherals.

- But upon restarting, the system stalled on POST. The hard disk might not be the cause of the problem.

- So I opened the side cover of the system unit and check for blown or leaking capacitors on the motherboard because these capacitors when they malfunction gives the same problem as observed - system stalling or not no booting up at all. But as I have checked on the mobo, there seemed to be no blown or leaky capacitors. So I decided to check the other peripheral that has capacitors in it - the Power Supply Unit.

- I then removed the Power Supply from the system case. And as I opened the Power Supply Unit, I saw 3 blown capacitors! The Power Supply is practically to be replaced. It is not advisable to replace the capacitors in the Power Supply Unit for it might contribute a chain of troubles to the rest of the components of your computer including primarily your motherboard, hard disk, and your precious CPU.

- An hour after, the requested power supply arrived. After installing the new power supply, the system was turned on and it did not stall at all. It continued the Power on Self Test (POST) and seeks for a bootable disk! At last we found the culprit. I then will try to check the Hard Disk if it is still functional.

- The hard disk drive was then installed back and restarted the system unit. Not a surprise to me, there was an error indicating a disk scan or a scheduled check disk. The hard drive needs to be restored, this might be due to the defective power supply, it already affected the hard disk and should not be long enough be replaced immediately.

-So I turned off the system, installed her new DVD RAM and then run the XP SP2 cd to restore the installed XP Operating System of her computer. ( Restoring the XP OS in not yet covered in tis tutorial - you may ask for information thru commenting here and you will get your answers via email - we will discuss your problem in this blog so others may learn also. :-] )

- After the Operating System restoration, the system works just as fine but I recommended Ms. Elain to buy a new hard disk for her computer. The hard disk will fail any sooner.

REPORT:

- Stalling / Freezing on Welcome screen or on Power on Self Test (POST) was contributed by the defective power supply unit - which in the case of Ms. Elain's Computer, it was replaced.

- A defective Power Supply corrupts an Operating System ( Win XP ) , and even worse your Hard Disk Drive.

An IBM 6790KBM Computer Constantly Restarts on Boot

An IBM 6790KBM computer restarts after showing the Win XP bootscreen and also briefly shows the memory dump error or commonly called the Blue Screen of Death or the BSOD. It was handed to us but the system unit was already been tried to be fixed by another technician. We then asked the computer technician on what problems did he encounter and the fixes he has done. The computer technician said that he was suspecting the following components to be defective and has taken some actions or fixes.

a. RAM or its DIMM Slots
- He checked each of the RAMs in binary method. One RAM after the other tried on each DIMM slot.

b. Video Card
- The Video Card has also been suspected because it shows trashy video sometimes.

c. Motherboard
- The Computer technician said that he checked and tested the RAMs and the Video Card on another system and were just working fine. So he suspected that the motherboard is failing.

d. The Processor???
- Yup, he suspected the processor. That could be quite impossible considering that the computer has display and bios configuration could be accessed. What must he be thinking then.

e. The Power Supply Unit (PSU)
- I asked the technician earlier before I accepted this job that did he check the power supply. He said no, because everything seems fine and working.

Those were the Computer Technician's suspicion and I need to check it myself rather than resting my computer troubleshooting skills on his observations.

Date Fixed : August 27, 2010

Problem : IBM 6790-KBM computer will restart after showing the win xp boot screen and briefly stalls showing the memory dump error or the Blue Screen of Death or BSOD then restarts.

Owner : I dont know. The Computer Technician handed it to me.
Motherboard : IBM 6790KBM 1.5 Ghz Processor
Operating System : Win XP SP 2

Technician : Drokz

INTERVENING FACTORS

- Computer needs to be fixed in a day

OBSERVATIONS

- Intermittent restarts on boot up attempt
- Has power, has video, shows POST, boot attempts then crashes and restarts.

TROUBLESHOOTING PROCEDURES

***** please turn off the avr and unplugged the power cord if you'll replace and test any peripheral in a system *****

- Since it has display and shows the POST, we should check the RAMs if they are working right. To do this, disconnect all the data cables, the power connectors to the drive and the peripheral cards.

- The computer is installed with two RAMs so we need to check each RAM on every DIMM slot. After swapping each of the RAMs on the DIMM slots, we found out that DIMM slot 1 and the other RAM is defective. How was it determined? On POST. The Computer boots up so slow when the other RAM is inserted. And also if the good RAM is inserted in DIMM slot 1, it stalls the computer on POST. Use the binary method in testing the RAM.

- We already determined that one of the RAMs and DIMM slot 1 are defective and been eliminated (RAM removed, DIMM slot unused), it did not solve the problem at all. So its time to check the disconnected peripheral if which is failing. So we started checking with the hard drive.

- We connected the Hard Disk Drive and tried booting up the system. It looked good at first because the POST was relatively faster. But on XP's boot up screen, it still stalled and briefly show BSOD then restarted. We then assumed that this could be an OS problem but I suggested that the PSU must be checked.

- So we opened the PSU and found no physical evidence of defective components. But our suspicion on the PSU still persisted so we tried another good PSU and the system booted up successfully! We finally got the system running well. The tested good PSU was rated at 400 W, could it be that the older PSU can't fully sustain the power that the IBM consumes? The system is now running fine after some RAM , cable and connector checks.

SUMMARY :

- The IBM 6790KBM computer had a failing DIMM slot 1 and one of the RAMs is found to be defective. But removing the defective RAM and leaving the DIMM slot 1 unused didn't solve the problem but significantly made the computer run better.

- The PSU was then founded out to cause the boot-restart problem. This intermittent and stubborn problem was caused by the Power Supply Unit and has been replaced. The system is now up and running fine.

Computer Troubleshooting Safety Precautions

There is no such thing as effective troubleshooting if safety has not been met. The effectiveness of the troubleshooting comes only if there are no injuries, tool and equipment failure due to mishandling, peripheral malfunction due to misdiagnoses and mishandling and other things that marks the big 7-letter word - FAILURE . So what should you do to be able to do "Effective Troubleshooting" ? Follow the three most important things below to find out how and what to learn!

#1 What you wear might save you!

Yes you did not read it wrong. What you wear really matters specially if we are dealing with safety. In big companies, overall uniforms, laboratory gowns and technicians' gown are required to be worn in their work areas. As freelance technicians, we don't strictly follow company protocols but at least we must ensure safety through using proper clothing.

What is appropriate for every computer technician to wear are clothings that won't catch fire fast like cotton. Nylon clothes should be avoided. One must also wear clothes with shorter sleeves to keep the connectors and other things in the system unit from clinging to your clothing. Buttoned shirts and clothing with dangling laces or similar should not be worn during computer troubleshooting.

Please don't use very loose clothes like the hip hop crews wear, rings, necklaces, dangling earrings, bracelets, and similar objects as well.

#2 Electro-Static Discharge is not your bestfriend

ESD is a form of electricity that can wreck havoc to your computer peripherals or its components. How do you get ESD's? Just everywhere, upon walking when you rub your shoe against a carpet, or combing your hair or just anything you rub against or touch. To be able to avoid damaging your computer system unit, you must discharge the ESD by using the ESD Wrist Strap while working with your computer.

But what if you don't have any ESD Wrist Strap? Don't worry before opening up your unplugged computer system, touch any unpainted portions of the system unit for a few seconds. This can significantly dissipate the ESD that you have in your body. Also consider using Anti-Static Mat while working your your computer to ensure safety against Static Electricity. But again, grounding yourself to the computer's chassis is enough to drain off the ESD's.

Since ESD's can damage computer peripherals and components, it is best to store your removed components and peripherals in Anti-Static Bags.

#3 Working Safely with Electricity

Whether your home outlet is 110 or 220 volts Alternating Current (AC), it can potentially kill you. But before working safely with the insides of your computer, let us be familiar first with the outsides of the computer.

In powerlines, the electricity that flows through the lines are not perfectly stable. The voltage may rise and fall and this action of the unstable voltage is called a voltage spike. Though most devices can operate even with voltage spikes, your computer cannot endure this spikes. What your computer eats is a stable supply of electrical current. The Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) does this job. It regulates or flattens out the AC flow of electricity to be fed to your computer. After the AVR, your computer receives the regulated 110 or 220 V AC electricity into your Power Supply Unit (PSU) and converts it into Direct Current (DC) like 12, 5, and 3.3 V respectively.

Whew! that was quite technical - we're technicians remember ey? Hehehe! So we have in mind that the electricity we get from the outlet is 110 or 220 V unregulated and as it passes though the AVR it is still 110 or 220 V but the spikes are now removed - and still dangerous. As the electricity from the AVR is received by the PSU, it is converted to DC and is now less dangerous. In other words if you are working with your computer, turn off your system unit and unplug the power cord from the AVR. If you might say that the DC current of the motherboard is small and can not cause you harm, consider that the components of your computer are sensitive to electrical shortages.
