Sony has unveiled its latest performance ultraportable, the Sony VAIO Z Series, tipping the scales at under 1.2kg but still offering – thanks to a docking station that uses the same Intel Thunderbolt connection technology as Apple recently adopted - solid graphics performance with an external video card. Sony’s New VAIO Z Series Is Available Now, Lightest 13-inch High Performance Notebook

Sony’s much anticipated VAIO Z Series ultraportable notebooks have arrived. This new VAIO Z Series is touted as the “world’s lightest 13-inch standard voltage PC” and features an ultra slim design that’s thinner and lighter than the MacBook Air while packing in high performance specs with Intel’s latest Sandy Bridge Core i5 and i7 processors.

 

The new VAIO Z Series notebook is designed to work in tandem with a Power Media Dock that delivers the power of an AMD Radeon HD 6650M graphics card with 1GB VRAM, a slot loading optical drive, one USB 3.0 port, two USB 2.0 ports, HDMI, and VGA ports. Thanks to this pairing, the new Z Series is now a half pound lighter than its predecessor and weighs only 2.5 pounds.

The sleek chassis measures just 0.66-inch thin and is made of a combination of aluminum and carbon fiber. It is designed to be fully flat without any protruding ports or unnecessary seams. Battery life is rated for up to 8 hours and can be boosted to 16 hours with the purchase of an optional large-capacity sheet battery that attaches flush on the bottom.

The notebook is equipped with the latest Intel Sandy Bridge Core i5 and i7 processors that can be turbo boosted to 3.4GHz and has dual-channel SSD drives with RAID tehcnology. It also sports Intel’s Light Peak port, also known on Apple products as the Thunderbolt port, that promises up to 10Gbps of blazing fast bi-directional data transfer speeds.

Other things to note include the notebook’s 16:9 aspect ratio display that’s available in either 1920×1080 or 1600×900 resolution levels with anti-glare coating. The notebook comes in three colors carbon black, carbon indigo, and premium carbon black. It is available now for pre-orders at Sony’s website and retails starting at around $2000.

GIGABYTE A series mobos play Crisis 2 at 40 frames per second…

Our friends from VR-Zone.com managed to get some footage of the new A75M-UD2H motherboard running an overclocked AMD A8-3850 APU running Crysis 2 at 30-40 frames per second.

The APU was heavily overclocked and game settings were less than optimal, but nevertheless, Crisis 2 on IGP is unheard of!

Speaking of which, we just released our own little video featuring GIGABYTE’s A75 chipset MBs that debuts Stew, our new in house geek and PC gamer. He’s from Liverpool as I’m sure you’ll pick up if you check out this little production.

GIGABYTE officially launch AMD Llano A series Motherboards

Today we’re officially announcing the launch of our new A series motherboard range, supporting the very latest AMD APUs which we think will offer DIY builders a solid mainstream platform with added graphics muscle. We’ve announced seven motherboard models all based on the AMD A75 chipset. The top SKU is the GA-A75-UD4H which is an ATX form factor board with integrated HDMI, DisplayPort, Dual Link DVI and D-Sub video outputs, two PCIe ports (x16 and x8) supporting CrossFireX and a slew of features including 8 USB 3.0 ports, an 8+2 phase power VRM on a 2oz PCB – all in all, it’s one hell of a board.

We’re predicting that these new AMD APUs will invigorate the mainstream and entry-level DIY segment, offering some pretty decent graphics and 3D gaming performance as well as solid HD video capabilities. The integrated GPU on these Llano chips is really quite impressive. Here’s a video we made showing the platform playing Crysis 2 – not something you’d usually do without employing a discrete graphics card. As you can also see in the video, we also managed to squeeze a substantial overclock from our AMD A8350 APU, hitting a score of over 6000 points in 3DMark Vantage (performance mode). I’m sure you’ll agree….pretty impressive!

As you may have noticed, all these new A75-based boards will be sold as part of our Super4 motherboard product range. This basically means that you’re getting high-end components from top to bottom; features like 2ox copper PCB, 50,000 hour solid capacitors, dual BIOS chips, On/Off charging, dedicated fusing for each USB port and 108db HD audio. Coolaler.com Forums: Llano graphics out-paces AMD 6 series VGA card

Well-known Taiwanese reviewers at XtremeSystems have tested our Gigabyte A75M-UD2H motherboard and the AMD Llano A8-3800 APU. As well as looking at the A75M-UD2H board itself and its packaging, they also looked at how the A8-3800 APU and the A75M-UD2H teamed up in terms of basic performance and overclocking tests.

Interestingly, they also took the time to compare the new Llano A8-3850 APU with previous generation AMD architectures. They took AMD Athlon II X4 645 and Phenom II X4 970BE CPUs (both clocked at the same 2.9GHz), pairing them both with an AMD 6450 HD discrete card.

In terms of the actual CPU performance parts, the Llano APU just about wins in all the test against the Athlon II, but the gap is not too much, winning by a maximum 20% in CPUmark99. The Phenom II fairs marginally better, beating the Llano in some CPU tests. In terms of display performance however, the integrated Lynx GPU wipes the floor with the HD6450 discrete card on all benchmarks.

This is a really great demonstration of how AMD’s new Llano platform is offering a really compelling upgrade option for AMD users and DIY builders looking for a solid graphics and processing performance.

Sony Vaio Z Series Announced



Sony introduce its new member of Vaio Family the-Vaio Z Series. The Vaio Z is an extreme thin and portable notebook device that characterize a 16.65mm frame which was build using Carbon Fiber, a material that was made exploit of carbon atoms, what one is intelligent as a strong material.

The Vaio Z Notebook series arrived anf equipped with a 13.1-inch LCD display with a 1600×900 or 1920×1080 resolution, the series gets powered by Intel’s Sandy Bridge series of processor accompanied by the choice of the 2.7GHz Core i7-2620M processor plus the Vaio Z arrives with the Quick Boot work which allows the device to start up 50% faster than the routine notebook PC.

The Sony Vaio Z body pack weighs nearly  1.18kg what one means it is also lightweight, there are more specifications such as Intel HD 3000 graphics chip, 256GB of SSD storage, 8GB of RAM, a fingerprint reader for security and a lot of connectivity options which includes Bluetooth 2.1, 3G, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, USB 3.0, HDMI ports and a battery life of 7 hours what one can be boosted to 14 hours using an choice of sheet battery. Intel 710 and 720 Series SSDs features and details

The 710 series will arise in 100GB, 200GB, and 300GB with the 720 arriving in 200GB and 400GB amount that can hold. The 710 SSD has 25nm MLC-HET NAND under the hood with the 720 getting 34nm SLC NAND. The cache on the 710 line is 64MB with the 720 getting a 512MB cache. The main difference between the 710 and the 720 SSD is the interface used for connecting to the computer. The 710 use a SATA 3GB/s drive and the 720 uses the PCIe 2.0.

The PCIe drive is flaming fast with 2,200MB/s read sped and 1,800MB/s writes with the 710 becoming 270MB/s read and 210MB/s write. The 720 PCIe equipment also take into account for very impressive 4KB reads at 180,000 IOPS and 4KB writes at 56,000 IOPS while the 710 scores 35,000 IOPS on 4KB random reads and 3,300 IOPS 4KB random write. The PCIe 720 SSD is much more power hungry needing 25W when active compared to the 710 needing 4W. That is impressive performance and at this time we aren’t sure what the launch schedule is going to be, the best we have is Q2 for the 710 and Q4 for the 720 series.

Intel SSD 710 and 720 Series Specifications Revealed

In our Intel roadmap article published in May, we shortly previewed Intel's upcoming 700 Series SSDs. Back then there wasn't much to talk about as very few specs were known. Today we have some additional details to share, thanks to German site ComputerBase.de.

I want to start off by saying that these SSDs are aimed at enterprise use. If you want an SSD for your gaming rig, you should look at our mid-range SSD roundup for example. 

The Intel 700 Series is meant to replace the X25-E lineup, Intel's enterprise series, which hasn't been updated since late 2008 so it's long overdue. However, neither of these is an exact successor. The 710 Series is closer with its 2.5" form factor and SATA 3Gb/s. The 710 Series is actually pretty close to the 320 Series in terms of specs: sustained write is slightly higher but random performance is a bit lower. The biggest difference between the 320 and 710 series is the NAND type. 320 Series uses regular MLC that you can find inside any mainstream SSDs; 710 Series is Intel's first enterprise level SSD to use MLC NAND, but not just any kind of MLC—it will use MLC-HET NANDs. MLC-HET offers more write cycles per cell so longetivity is increased, which is crucial for enterprises. The only downside is that MLC-HET will only last for 3 months after all write cycles have been used, whereas normal MLC will last for 12 months. However, this shouldn't be an issue due to the increased amount of write cycles. For the record, MLC-HET with 20% over-provisioning (OP) appears to offer roughly 65 times greater endurance than normal MLC. 

The 720 Series will be Intel's first PCIe SSD. To take full advantage of it, you will need at least a PCIe 2.0 x8 slot since a x4 slot will only provide up to 2GB/s while the 720 Series provides read speeds of up to 2.2GB/s. It will use 34nm SLC NANDs, which is pretty common for high-end enterprise SSDs due to SLC's much better endurance. The 720 Series promises up to 36PB (yes, as in 36000TB) of 8KB writes for the 400GB SSD. That is nearly 1000 times more durable than 25nm MLC and over 10 times more durable than 25nm MLC-HET.

One of the biggest and most needed upgrades from X25-E is the much better encryption support. X25-E offered only ATA password protection, which is way too vulnerable by today's standards, especially when considering that even the mainstream 320 Series supports 128-bit AES. 720 Series will take that one step even further by supporting 256-bit AES encryption. This is very important for enterprises handling confidential data; you don't want your data get into the wrong hands and you are ready to pay the premium for the best protection.

This update is essential for Intel to stay competitive in the enterprise SSD market. It has already been 2.5 years since the last update and when considering the progress of SSDs during this time, it's surprising that the update hasn't take place sooner. There isn't much news on the release schdule so the best we've got is what we have already posted: Q2'11 for 710 Series and Q4'11 for 720 Series SSDs. The 710 Series seems to be the low-end offering and it's basically the same as the 320 Series with improved endurance. The 720 Series, on the other hand, is an SSD for heavy enterprise use with features making it suitable for such use. OCZ has pretty much been the dominator of PCIe SSD market but Intel's 720 Series could offer some serious competition in the high-end PCIe SSD market.

Computex 2011: Up Close with ASUS UX Series with SanDisk's U100 SSD

I met with SanDisk earlier today and to my surprise they had an ASUS UX Ultrabook in their meeting room. It turns out that at least one model in the UX Series will use SanDisk's brand new U100 SSD. 

The U100 is SanDisk's first 6Gbps drive based on SanDisk's own controller. SanDisk's architecture is a little different than what we're used to. They claim to be doing some SandForce-like data reduction but they wouldn't give me any details on what they're actually doing. The controller doesn't have any DRAM to augment it, which lends credibility to some SF-like technology at work here. 

 SanDisk also uses a hybrid SLC/MLC setup where a small percentage of each MLC NAND die is actually configured as SLC NAND to act as a read/write cache in front of the rest of the die. This results in better random write performance and reliability. The U100 in ASUS' UX Series notebook is a mSATA drive in a MacBook Air-like thin gumstick form factor. SanDisk is promising idle power usage of only 10mW, although peak load is 4W. Overall performance isn't SandForce-like. Maximum sequential read speed is listed at 450MB/s, with 340MB/s writes. Random performance isn't that good, SanDisk quotes a burst speed of only 2300 IOPS. That's still a lot better than a hard drive but definitely not as good as what we're used to from high end SSDs. Keep in mind that the UX Series is more like a MacBook Air than a traditional notebook, and these are much better performance specs than what Apple currently ships in the MBA. {gallery 1098}]]>

Announced today at Computex 2011 and shipping immediately will be AMD’z Z series APUs, AMD’s formal entry into the modern tablet market.

While at this time it’s neigh-on impossible to get into a phone without a SoC (just ask Intel), tablets can be more forgiving. With a larger device and a larger battery, such devices don’t necessarily have the same extreme integration requirements and battery life requirements as a phone, even if the processors used in such devices are often the same. As a result of AMD’s current resources and technologies, it’s the tablet market that they have decided to go after first.

The Z-series, codename “Desna”, currently has a single APU that is shipping immediately: the Z-01.

The Z-01, as near as we can tell, is a power optimized version of AMD’s existing C-50 APU. It features the same dual-core CPU design, using a pair of Bobcat CPU cores running at 1GHz. The GPU meanwhile is a Radeon HD 6250, and while AMD hasn’t listed the clocks, we believe it’s clocked at the same 280MHz as in the C-50. We don’t have any information on whether AMD is using the same packaging for the Z-01 as they are the C series, but otherwise the available specifications are identical to the C-50 with one exception: TDP. While the C-50 is rated for 9W, the Z-01 is rated for 5.9W. Given the 33% power reduction, it’s a fair guess that AMD is binning Ontario chips to find ones that operate at the low voltages Z-01 would require.

Based on what we’ve seen with the C-50, the Z-01 should perform far above any other tablet processor. However the 5.9W TDP means that it’s not going to be in the same market as the likes of OMAP 4, Tegra 2, Apple’s A5, or even Intel’s Moorestown. All of these SoCs/platforms use well under 5.9W, and with the exception of Moorestown are all ARM based.

So what kind of tablets is AMD shooting for with the Z-01? The primary market is going to be full-fledged Windows 7 tablets, although Z-01 is capable of running the x86 branch of Android too. The first product will be the MSI Windpad 110W, which we actually saw earlier in the day before AMD’s announcement. The 110W is a 10” tablet running Windows 7 (Win7 Pro on the showfloor), which should retail for around $599.

Ultimately the biggest factor differentiating Z-01 tablets from ARM tablets is going to be Windows 7, given that a suitable version of Android is not yet available. Tablets like the 110W are going to be sold based on their ability to use applications like Microsoft Office, Windows Media Center, Windows games (that will run on a Radeon HD 6250 of course), and any other common Windows applications. So while devices like the iPad are based around media consumption, for Z-01 tablets AMD’s goals are more about a balance of consumption and creation, putting Z-01 tablets in a somewhat different market segment altogether.

We’ll have more on the Z-01 and the MSI Windpad 110W later this year once the tablet ships.

Samsung 470 - Where We Started

Back in January following CES, we had a look at Samsung's 470 Series SSD which performed very well in our tests in comparison to other SATA II drives. Our readers have asked numerous times if we could take a longer term look at an SSD to see how the performance fares over time. We thought the Samsung drive would be as good a guinea pig as any. So, we loaded up the drive with our normal day-to-day OS filled with apps like games, photo editing software, productivity software, etc. and began to use it consistently over the course of three months. Measurements on a few benchmarks were taken at midway point and end to compare against the "virgin state" performance.

All of this angst from users about drive slowdown comes as a result of the early SSD which didn't support TRIM and/or idle garbage collection which was certainly a problem over the long haul. As a refresher, let's have a look at the specifications for the drive.

The drive is powered by Samsung's own controller with 32nm ToggleDDR NAND and a pair of 64MB DDR2-667 cache chips thrown in. The drive supports TRIM and idle garbage collection which will largely be responsible for the performance levels over time. During use, we did nothing to clean or reset the drive and relied on the aforementioned built-in maintenance mechanisms to take care of things. Overall, I was surprised how well the drive performed and I've been very impressed with its performance as a daily driver.  I honestly wasn't expecting Samsung to be so competitive.
