Tablet PC shipments expected to reach 21-22 million in Q3, 2011

Digitimes reports that Tablet PC shipments are expected to almost double from 14 million in Q2, to 22 million in Q3. The vast majority (14-15 million or 70%) will be iPads, while the rest will come from Amazon, HTC, Samsung, HP, Dell, etc…

image

You may be asking why a desktop motherboard marketing person is blogging about tablets? It’s not so strange when you consider that tablets are not entirely stand alone devices in that they need to be enabled and synced with a computer from time to time. The iPad is an excellent example of this where you need to set up an iTunes account that will enable your iPad before you use it, and you use the same setup to add/remove documents on your iPad. So essentially, content is created, stored and shared from a PC, and it is consumed on tablets.

Now if you consider the advantages of a desktop PC, it has more processing power for creating video and other content, it has more storage options for adding terabytes of storage space for high-def video (and backups), and it charges your tablet PC while you sync (share) your content. So the desktop PC is a better match for tablets than a notebook! Not to mention the inherent competition between tablets and notebooks/netbooks seeing as they’re all thin, light, have long battery life and help you stay connected on the go…  Well, actually tablets do all that better than notebooks don’t they? No wonder we’re excited about tablets!

That may be why Canalys and other industry analysts are expecting over 10% growth in the PC market in 2011. Have a look at this news post:

Canalys predicts 14% growth in PC market for 2011

- For every 10 pads sold in 2011, five netbook or notebook PCs will not ship: http://www.canalys.com/pr/2011/r2011033.html

And here’s the plug: GIGABYTE motherboards come with 3x USB Power that can provide similar recharging speeds as power socket charging, and On/Off Charge that makes it possible to quick charge iPads whether it is on or off. So we’re innovating for tablets on our motherboards.

Moto tablet – Xoom arrives in India, with price tag of Rs 32,990

Motorola has released its Xoom tablet in the Indian market. The tablet, which was officially the first to run Android 3.0 (Honeycomb, the flavour of Android Google had specially brewed for tablets), arrives in two variants – a Wi-Fi one for Rs 32,990 (MRP: Rs 34,490) and a 3G one for Rs 39,990 (MRP: Rs 41,490). Both have 32 GB storage (no other storage variants, as of now), pack in a powerful 1 GHz dual core processor, 1 GB RAM, 10.1 inch displays, and battery lives that are expected to range in the vicinity of 10 hours over Wi-Fi. Yes, it is not the first Honeycomb tablet to appear in the Indian market (the Acer Iconia A500 stole a march there), but on paper, it certainly is one of the most powerful. The price might appear to be a bit on the stiff side to some, but is actually, pretty much in the vicinity of that of the 32GB iPad 2 Wi-Fi and 3G models. Interestingly, the Xoom has hit the Indian market exactly a day after the HTC Flyer did, and within a week of the PlayBook. Indian tablet poppers have never quite had it so good. Yes, yes, we are working on a review. Stay tuned.

Top Upcoming Tablet in the Market 2011, Specification, Feature, Review and Price

While the iPad attracted the elite crowd and the Apple fanboys, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab was the only other real option for a tablet. The sub-25K price bracket suddenly witnessed a surge in cheap Android based tablets, most of which were quite bad to be even called a tablet like the HCL Me AE7, ZingLife E-Pad and Creative’s ZiiO 7. Plus, the Motorola Xoom and the HTC Flyer have only just started rolling out, giving you even more choices. It doesn't stop here, let’s take a look at some of the tablets that are yet to arrive in 2011.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
The successor to the Galaxy Tab P1000, the Tab 10.1 will go up against the Motorola Xoom and the Acer A500 3G variant (if Acer actually launched this). Specification wise, it’s practically identical to the other two, so the deciding factor will have to be the user experience and ergonomics of the tablet. Acer has done little to no customization with the A500 (apart from some widgets) and we’ve not reviewed the Xoom yet, so we can’t comment on that, we really hope Samsung delivers on their TouchWiz user interface. Now I know their UI hasn’t exactly got them many fans when compared to HTC’s Sense but if they can pull off something like they did with the Galaxy S II, then we have some competition. No word on the price yet, but I guess it would launch at around the 35K mark.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1 Features -
10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen with Samsung’s PLS display technology
Supports resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels
3G, Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi only model to be available
Bluetooth v3.0 + EDR
GPS with A-GPS support for Google Maps
3.1MP rear AF camera with LED flash and 720p video recording capability, 2MP forward facing camera for video calling.
1080p HD@30fps video playback, DivX and Xvid support
Stereo speakers
Available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB editions with micro SD card support up to 32GB.

Toshiba Thrive
While we rarely see many Toshiba products in India, other than a few notebooks and portable drives, it's hard to say when or if, will this ever come to India. Nevertheless, we shouldn’t ignore this 10.1-inch slab of glass, as it has some very unique features not found in the other tablets. For starters, this is the first Android tablet to have a removable battery and will launch with Android 3.1. It will also feature an SD card slot capable of handling 128GB SDXC cards and will come with a ExFAT driver enabling it to handle up to 1TB external hard drives over the USB port. Hopefully, Toshiba realizes the growing tablet market in India and will launch this quickly.

The Toshiba Thrive also features -
10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen with 1280x800 pixel resolution
Wi-Fi 'n' support
Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR
GPS with A-GPS support for Google Maps
5MP Autofocus rear camera, 2MP front facing camera
Available in 8GB, 16GB, 32GB editions with micro SD card support up to 32GB

Dell Streak 7
Dell’s next stint with tablets comes in the form of a slightly larger version of their first Streak phone. Called the Streak 7, the dimensions are more in line with BlackBerry’s PlayBook which will be their first target. The tablet is powered by Froyo and an Nvidia Tegra 2 CPU along with a 5MP auto-focus camera and buttons on the bezel which we don’t see on other tablets. The HTC Flyer which also sports a 7-inch screen should provide stiff competition once this releases. Once again, nothing on the India availability or pricing as of now. The Streak 7 will appeal mostly to people who liked the form factor of the PlayBook, but wanted the flexibility of Android. Sadly, Dell has no plans to launch the Streak 7 in India anytime soon so you'll have to import one if you want to get it.

The Dell Streak 7 features -
7-inch capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels
3G, Wi-Fi
Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP
GPS with A-GPS support
5MP rear AF camera with 720p video recording capability, 1.3MP forward facing camera for video calling
MP4/H.263/H.264/WMV video playback
16GB built-in storage with micro SD card support up to 32GB

Motorola Xoom
Motorola XOOM tablet feature a 5 megapixel auto-focus camera at rear side with dual-LED flash and capable of 720p HD video recording at 30 fps. Motorola XOOM tablet also equipped with 2 megapixel fron facing video call camera. It comes with dual-band (2.4GHz and 5GHz) Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n connectivity and can be used as a Wi-Fi hotspot.According to sources Verizon US version of Motorola XOOM will be getting a 4G/LTE update very soon. This tablet is available with 16 GB, 32 GB, 64GB of onboard storage memory options.

Motorola XOOM tablet features and specs also include microSD card slot (up to 32GB), Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, Accelerometer, compass,  three-axis gyro-sensor, barometer sensor, GPS with A-GPS support on all models, Dual-band (2.4GHz and 5GHz) Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n connectivity, Wi-Fi hotspot, Optional 3G connectivity (data only) – HSPA or 1xEV-DO (LTE via upgrade), HD TV-Out via microHDMI port, microUSB with host functionality, Flash-enabled web browser, 10 hours video playback and 3.3 days of music playback.
The Motorola Xoom features
10.1” screen of 1280 x 800 pixels resolution
1 GHz dual-core processor tegra 2
1 GB DDR2 RAM
Android Honeycomb 3.0 operating system
32 GB on-board storage memory expandable Upto 32 GB micro SD external memory support
5 megapixel rear-camera & 2 megapixel front camera

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Review: The Sleekest Honeycomb Tablet

I remember standing in the audience of Samsung's CTIA press conference as it announced, for the first time ever, pricing and availability of its unreleased Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 8.9 before shipping. The smartphone (and early tablet) industries have gone this long without having to really compete based on price, mostly because in North America the carriers subsidize much of the cost. If every device costs $199 under contract, why get carried away with details like how much it actually costs?

The Galaxy Tab however was playing in a different space. While Apple ultimately caved to the pressures of carrier subsidies with the iPhone, the iPad remains completely unsubsidized and its followers buy it by the millions. The magical price point is $499 and it was at Samsung's CTIA press conference that it announced it would be matching Apple's $499 price point, and even dropping slightly below it for the 8.9-inch version.

At the time it seemed like a bold move, enough to give Honeycomb the fighting chance it needed. The Galaxy Tab would be thinner and lighter than the iPad 2 but competitively priced as well. This wouldn't be another Xoom.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (top) vs. ASUS Eee Pad Transformer (bottom)

Then ASUS showed up. At $399, the Eee Pad Transformer not only offered a different usage model to the iPad and Galaxy Tab, it brought a lower price tag as well. Availability has been slim thanks to component shortages, but with the Eee Pad selling for $399 the Galaxy Tab at $499 all of the sudden seems overpriced.

Based on specs alone you'd be right. Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 has the same NVIDIA Tegra 2 tablet SoC inside, 1GB of LPDDR2 and 16GB of NAND on-board. You get a 10.1-inch 1280 x 800 PLS display and 802.11n WiFi support.

Where Samsung gives you something more for your money is in build quality and form factor. While Eee Pad Transformer feels surprisingly good for a cost reduced tablet, it doesn't feel nearly as slim or portable as the Galaxy Tab 10.1. It's no wonder Samsung went back to the drawing board on this one, the result is something that in many ways feels better than the iPad 2.

Computex 2011: AMD Announces Bobcat-based Z Series APUs for Tablet Market

While AMD does not have a true SoC to combat the likes of Intel, NVIDIA, and ARM, this doesn’t mean they’re completely ignoring the market for the type of devices SoCs normally go in. Announced today at Computex 2011 and shipping immediately will be AMD’z Z series APUs, AMD’s formal entry into the modern tablet market.

While at this time it’s neigh-on impossible to get into a phone without a SoC (just ask Intel), tablets can be more forgiving. With a larger device and a larger battery, such devices don’t necessarily have the same extreme integration requirements and battery life requirements as a phone, even if the processors used in such devices are often the same. As a result of AMD’s current resources and technologies, it’s the tablet market that they have decided to go after first.

The Z-series, codename “Desna”, currently has a single APU that is shipping immediately: the Z-01.

AMD APU LineupAPU ModelNumber of Bobcat CoresCPU Clock SpeedGPUNumber of GPU CoresGPU Clock SpeedTDPAMD Z-0121.0GHzRadeon HD 625080276Mhz5.9WAMD C-3011.2GHzRadeon HD 625080280MHz9WAMD C-5021.0GHzRadeon HD 625080280MHz9WAMD E-24011.5GHzRadeon HD 631080500MHz18WAMD E-35021.6GHzRadeon HD 631080500MHz18W

The Z-01, as near as we can tell, is a power optimized version of AMD’s existing C-50 APU. It features the same dual-core CPU design, using a pair of Bobcat CPU cores running at 1GHz. The GPU meanwhile is a Radeon HD 6250, and while AMD hasn’t listed the clocks, we believe it’s clocked at the same 280MHz as in the C-50. We don’t have any information on whether AMD is using the same packaging for the Z-01 as they are the C series, but otherwise the available specifications are identical to the C-50 with one exception: TDP. While the C-50 is rated for 9W, the Z-01 is rated for 5.9W. Given the 33% power reduction, it’s a fair guess that AMD is binning Ontario chips to find ones that operate at the low voltages Z-01 would require.

Based on what we’ve seen with the C-50, the Z-01 should perform far above any other tablet processor. However the 5.9W TDP means that it’s not going to be in the same market as the likes of OMAP 4, Tegra 2, Apple’s A5, or even Intel’s Moorestown. All of these SoCs/platforms use well under 5.9W, and with the exception of Moorestown are all ARM based.

So what kind of tablets is AMD shooting for with the Z-01? The primary market is going to be full-fledged Windows 7 tablets, although Z-01 is capable of running the x86 branch of Android too. The first product will be the MSI Windpad 110W, which we actually saw earlier in the day before AMD’s announcement. The 110W is a 10” tablet running Windows 7 (Win7 Pro on the showfloor), which should retail for around $599.

Ultimately the biggest factor differentiating Z-01 tablets from ARM tablets is going to be Windows 7, given that a suitable version of Android is not yet available. Tablets like the 110W are going to be sold based on their ability to use applications like Microsoft Office, Windows Media Center, Windows games (that will run on a Radeon HD 6250 of course), and any other common Windows applications. So while devices like the iPad are based around media consumption, for Z-01 tablets AMD’s goals are more about a balance of consumption and creation, putting Z-01 tablets in a somewhat different market segment altogether.

We’ll have more on the Z-01 and the MSI Windpad 110W later this year once the tablet ships.

Preview of Windows OS based tablet coming next week?

We've learned an awful lot about a Windows tablet OS this past five months, with stirrings of a 2012 launch and now the rumor mill has been set in motion with word of an impending preview expected next week. According to Bloomberg, three sources have confirmed Microsoft's plan to flaunt the much-anticipated UI, possibly at upcoming appearances at AllThingsD and Computex. The showcase is supposedly set to run the touchscreen-enabled software on a Tegra-equipped machine. We'd previously reported on stirrings of a June demo. Considering all the evidence that's stacked up over the past few months, we'd say 2012 is looking like a rather practical target.

The ASUS Padfone: A Smartphone That Docks into a Tablet

A number of you have asked for this innovation over the past few months: a smartphone that docks into a tablet. Given that the two platforms generally share the same hardware, it seems to make sense. ASUS has heard your calls and today announced its Padfone, and no, I'm not joking about the name.

Building off of the expertise with the Eee Pad Transformer, the Padfone is a smartphone that's dockable into a tablet. The intelligence is entirely inside the ph...er fone part, the pad is strictly a display and extended capacity battery.

ASUS didn't announce anything on availability, internal specs or even what OS it would run. In one shot ASUS had a Windows interface and in another shot it had a Honeycomb interface. Clearly this is a work in progress but it's an interesting concept. Update: ASUS tells us that the Padfone will run Android and that the Windows interface was simply a mistake in the demo video.
